Rizk Ventures/Mourning Family Foundation Co-Host ‘Zo’s Groove with a Purpose’ Event

Linda RizkRizk Ventures was humbled and honored to co-host the amazing event “Zo’s All-Star Weekend Groove with a Purpose” with our good friends Alonzo Mourning and Tracy Wilson-Mourning of the Mourning Family Foundation. The “FUNraiser” was held at No. 8 in New York City on Thursday February 12th, 2015 and kicked off the National Basketball Association All-Star Weekend. Proceeds from the event benefited the Mourning Family Foundation’s programs and services that support underprivileged youth.

Tom and I, along with our children Geoffrey and Alexandra, have been long time supporters of Alonzo and Tracy’s work. Their efforts to champion the needs of children, which is a core component of our philanthropic efforts at Rizk Ventures, has been extremely inspiring to witness.

The event, spearheaded by our son Geoffrey, is a great example of how we have tried to fulfill our lifetime mission of service to others. We are proud of what he has accomplished and how he and Alexandra are furthering our legacy. The evening was a great success and we know that the crucial funds we raised will make a huge impact on the lives of underprivileged children.

“Our event brought together individuals of influence to celebrate All-Star Weekend and, more importantly, to give back to our community and discuss the powerful impact we can have nationwide,” said Tracy Wilson-Mourning. “We are so fortunate to have young brilliant business minds like Geoffrey Rizk and his family, Tom and Linda and Alexandra, who have committed to supporting us in our endeavors. Their work with our organization has been invaluable.”

The event featured Gayle King, co-anchor of CBS This Morning and Editor at Large for O, and MC Lyte who, along with Tracy Wilson-Mourning, co-hosted a roundtable discussion titled the “Power of Influence Through Sisterhood”. The enlightening conversation highlighted the empowerment of women that Honey Shine, Inc., a mentoring organization under the Mourning Family Foundation umbrella, provides to girls by encouraging education, advocacy, and leadership.

MC Lyte was our DJ for the night and she created an amazing musical experience for our guests. The night celebrated family, friendship, and our mission to pay it forward with the entire Rizk Ventures team coming out to support the event.

A Reflection on 2014 and the Rizk Ventures Holiday Party

Linda RizkThis has been a wonderful year for Rizk Ventures. We have undertaken many large initiatives, including the acquisition of Classroom 24-7, an online education company that focuses on online training and management of distributed workforces, continuing education programs for professionals, and graduate degree programs at top-tier institutions. In addition, we founded Counter Human Trafficking Compliance Solutions (CHTCS), a global compliance and advisory company that provides specialized programs and services required to combat human trafficking, forced labor, and child labor within corporate supply chains. We also had the honor to sponsor the Operation Game On Golf Classic where we met and spoke with many veterans and their families. Their stories and courage continue to inspire us.

We recently celebrated the end of a wonderful year at the Rizk Ventures Holiday Party this past weekend. We gathered at the historic Rockefeller Estate to celebrate with all of our friends and family. The party was held in the Playhouse, a building on the Rockefeller estate filled with a bowling alley, billiards room, indoor tennis courts, and much more. Every room of the building was filled with beautiful touches, including three fireplaces brought from John D. Rockefeller’s New York property. We were joined by the CHTCS and Classroom 24-7 teams, who both work diligently and tirelessly for their great causes. Geoff had the fantastic opportunity to pay it forward by honoring Alonzo and Tracy Mourning’s foundation with a donation for Tracy’s Honey Shine program, a wonderful initiative to develop the mind body and soul of women in need through mentoring. Alonzo Mourning provided guests with an inspiring speech about his foundation and the importance of communal support towards the success of any individual.

Grammy nominated Musician and Songwriter, Skylar Grey, also provided us with entertainment for the evening. Skylar performed her hit song “I’m Coming Home” which she dedicated to our troops, many of which were in attendance that night.

On behalf of the whole Rizk Ventures team, I would like to extend a very warm thank you to all our friends, family, clients, and those who serve our country in the armed forces. We would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season and a joyous New Year!

Operation Game On founder honored

RANCHO SANTA FE — A Rancho Santa Fe man who founded a golf program to help wounded warriors return “to a somewhat normal life” recently received a U.S. flag that flew over the headquarters of the Regional Command Southwest and Marine Expeditionary Brigade aboard Camp Leatherneck in the Helmand province of Afghanistan this past Sept. 11.

Brig. Gen. Daniel D. Yoo honored Tony Perez with the flag, which was flown for Perez as part of a ceremony to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on this country.

“What can I say but that I am very moved and (it) immediately brought me to tears,” Perez said. “The flag will forever remind me of those that paid the ultimate price.

“And for those that survived, it is my honor to serve those that allowed OGO to be a part of their rehabilitation to get back to a somewhat normal life through golf,” he added.

Perez prefers not to be lauded for his efforts, insisting servicemen and women, especially those wounded in action, are the “real heroes.”

“But this special flag is one that I will always cherish for the rest of my life,” he said.

In 2008, Perez started Operation Game On, a program for severely injured soldiers undergoing rehabilitation at the Naval Medical Center San Diego and Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton and Vietnam War veterans.

Participants receive free golf lessons from PGA-certified instructors at the Del Mar Golf Center and a professional fitting session by the staff at The Kingdom at TaylorMade Golf.

They also receive custom-fitted equipment at no cost to them, the hospital or the military.

To help cover costs, Perez holds a golf tournament that in recent years has raised about $75,000 annually. At the banquet following this year’s event in August, title sponsor Linda Rizk announced a $100,000 donation.

Rizk Ventures and Alonzo Mourning Host Ice Skating Party for The York Street Project

Linda RizkThis past fall, NBA superstar Alonzo Mourning received the devastating news that he needed an emergency kidney transplant. As the shockwaves from his announcement rippled throughout the world, Alonzo found himself in a tough situation. His commitment to charitable endeavors are well-known, and that December he had planned to host “Zo’s Annual Holiday Party,” an ice skating event at Rockefeller Center with the children of the York Street Project . Despite the great adversity that lay ahead of him, Alonzo refused to cancel, and instead enlisted the support of Rizk Ventures. Tom and I had been introduced to the Mourning family earlier in the year, and they personally called us to ask if we could help. Alonzo explained that he would be heading into surgery the morning after the event, so he would not be able to attend. Even in the face of an invasive medical procedure and a career ending illness, he wanted to ensure that the children were “well taken care of.” Delighted by the prospect of working with the York Street Project to bring holiday joy to so many children, we of course accepted the couple’s invitation.

When called upon, our team at Rizk Ventures sprang into action. My son Geoff organized a toy drive at his high school and was able gather over 50 gifts, each of which corresponded directly to a special wish made by a York Street child that year. My daughter Alexandra came to the event dressed as Santa’s helper and worked with our “real” Santa to distribute presents. We made all the necessary preparations with Rockefeller Center to create a private area for the children and had teams of professional skaters on hand to act as instructors. Alonzo’s wife, Tracy Wilson Mourning, left her husband’s bedside to attend, wearing a brave face as she hugged, skated, and spent time with each and every child. The passion and commitment to charity both Tracy and Alonzo have displayed solidified our friendship with the couple, and Tom and I plan to be lifelong supporters of the Mourning Family Foundation.

The Mourning Family Foundation was established by Alonzo and Tracy Mourning to inspire others through advocacy, education, and enrichment services. By contributing to the organization, donors with varied interests in children’s issues can give to several charities at once. Since 1997, MFF has raised over $4 million for various programs that aid in the development of children and their families, particularly those in socioeconomically challenged communities.

Rizk Ventures Honors Operation Game On at the San Diego Country Fair

Linda RizkRizk Ventures was proud to honor Operation Game On (OGO) and its founder Tony Perez yesterday at the San Diego County Fair by presenting them with a check for $25,000, and pledging our long-term support for the organization in the years to come.

OGO gives returning combat-injured troops suffering from physical and mental disabilities a very special, customized “intro-to-golf” package, which provides them golf lessons with certified PGA Golf Instructors, professional fitting sessions, golf equipment and apparel, as well as access to San Diego county courses at discounted rates.

Thomas A. Rizk and Rizk Ventures are proud to support OGO, believing that American patriots and veterans deserve programs that empower them through the transition from dangerous combat missions and traumatic experiences with IEDs back into their daily lives at home. After the amazing sacrifices the men and women of our armed forces have made on behalf of all Americans, it is crucial for us to contribute our time and money to ensure that they know they’ve earned our unwavering support.

There could not have been a better day to celebrate and honor the troops than the Fourth of July, the quintessential patriotic American holiday. The weather was perfect, like the day, and we had the chance to engage with so many families who have been affected by military operations. Our focus was not only on the heroes in the military, but the heroes at home: mothers, fathers, sons, daughters and wives who endure long periods without their loved ones and must also cope with the effects of combat injuries. It is with great pleasure that we were able to present several wives with “Purple Heart” bracelets that had been designed for this occasion. The amazing jewelry will be a constant reminder to these women that we recognize their sacrifice and we know that it takes great courage on the home front to ensure great courage on the front lines.
